| historical background |

The wrap-style jacket worn by Sturmgeschütz crews appeared with the development of German assault artillery units within the Wehrmacht at the beginning of the Second World War. The Sturmgeschütz, particularly the Sturmgeschütz III, was designed in the late 1930s to provide direct fire support for German infantry. Unlike conventional tanks of the Panzertruppe, these vehicles had no rotating turret but instead mounted their main gun in a fixed superstructure, giving them a lower profile and allowing simpler mass production.

Sturmgeschütz crews originally belonged to the artillery branch rather than the armored troops and therefore wore feldgrau uniforms instead of the black uniforms associated with Panzer units. The wrap jacket, inspired by the tank crew jacket, was short and practical, making it well suited for operating inside the confined interior of an armored vehicle.

During the Second World War, Sturmgeschütz units played an increasingly important role, especially on the Eastern Front where these assault guns were widely used for infantry support and anti-tank operations.

Today, original uniforms and equipment associated with Sturmgeschütz crews are highly sought after by militaria collectors due to their historical significance within German armored warfare of World War II.
