| historical background |

The Postschutz was established in the early 1930s to protect German postal facilities, communication networks, and technical infrastructure essential to the functioning of the state. Operating under the authority of the Deutsche Reichspost, the organization was initially tasked with security and surveillance duties aimed at safeguarding post offices, sorting centers, telephone lines, and other strategic installations against sabotage and internal disturbances.

With the outbreak of World War II, the Postschutz expanded significantly in both size and responsibility. Its units were involved in protecting postal and telecommunications infrastructure vital to the German war effort. From 1942 onward, the organization was progressively integrated into the regime’s wider security apparatus while continuing to fulfill its primary mission of safeguarding the Reich's communications network.

Objects, insignia, uniforms, documents, and effects associated with the Postschutz rank among the rarest categories of German WWII administrative and paramilitary militaria. Closely linked to a specialized and relatively little-known organization, they illustrate the strategic importance of communications services within the Reich and hold a distinctive place in collections dedicated to German security and paramilitary formations.
