| historical background |

The Kriegsmarine formed the naval branch of the German armed forces from 1935 in Germany. It developed a submarine fleet of U-boats intended to conduct naval warfare against enemy supply and communication routes. This strategy was part of Germany’s rearmament programme leading up to World War II and aimed at strengthening its naval capabilities.

Between 1939 and 1945, U-boats played a major role in naval warfare, particularly during the Battle of the Atlantic. They operated primarily on the surface or at periscope depth, targeting Allied merchant convoys in order to disrupt logistics and supply chains. Their deployment contributed to significant developments in naval tactics and submarine warfare throughout the conflict.
