The Kriegsmarine constituted the naval branch of the German armed forces from 1935 in Germany. It rapidly developed a submarine fleet known as U-boats, designed to conduct naval warfare against enemy supply lines. This strategy formed part of the German rearmament programme leading up to World War II and aimed at strengthening the country’s naval capabilities.
Between 1939 and 1945, U-boats played a central role in naval warfare, particularly during the Battle of the Atlantic. Operating in coordinated groups known as “wolfpacks,” they targeted merchant convoys in order to disrupt Allied supply routes. Their deployment contributed to significant developments in naval strategy and anti-submarine warfare tactics on both sides of the conflict.
