The Nazi Party, officially the National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei  or NSDAP), rose to power in Germany during the unstable years of the Weimar Republic, marked by the consequences of the Treaty of Versailles, economic crisis, and political fragmentation. Founded in 1920, the party rapidly evolved from a marginal movement into a mass organization built upon strict hierarchy and an increasingly centralized political structure. Under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, it became Germany’s dominant political force in the early 1930s, seized control of the state in 1933, and progressively transformed the institutions of the Reich into a total system until World War II.
