A superb double-breasted service jacket in navy blue tricotine, featuring gold-plated anchor buttons, three sleeve stripes surmounted by the Engineering Corps cogwheel emblem, and a hand-embroidered breast eagle and German Cross. It bears the label of a Dresden military tailor with the name of Kapitänleutnant R. Burchards and the date 1942. Burchards served aboard U-16 (from 1938), U-101 (from 1940, based in Lorient), U-129 (from 1941, Lorient) under Kapitänleutnant A.N. Clausen, and finally U-967 (from March 1943). For his service, he was awarded the prestigious German Cross in Gold on March 13, 1942. A museum-quality piece in excellent condition.
Rüdiger Burchards (born 9 July 1916 in Warnemünde) was a German naval engineer officer of the Kriegsmarine and a member of the Crew 1934. He served primarily aboard submarines before continuing his career in staff positions until the end of the Second World War.
Military career
1934: Joined the Kriegsmarine as a member of the Crew 1934.
1938: Served aboard U-16 (February–October).
1940–1941: Served aboard U-101 (Type VIIB), participating in several patrols in the North Atlantic, the English Channel and off the coast of Ireland. U-101 sank a total of 16 ships during the patrols in which Burchards participated.
1941–1942: Joined U-129 (Type IXC) as Leitender Ingenieur (LI), the submarine's chief engineering officer. He participated in operations in the North Atlantic, South Atlantic, the Caribbean and off the coast of French Guiana.
1942: After his service aboard U-129, he left active U-boat service and was assigned to staff duties, where he remained until the end of the war.
