| historical background |

The German gas mask from World War II was introduced in the 1930s and widely used by the Wehrmacht. Developed in response to the fear of chemical warfare inherited from World War I, it became a standard item of German military equipment. It was typically stored in a cylindrical metal canister (Maskenbüchse), allowing easy transport and quick access.

Intended to protect soldiers from chemical attacks, it was carried at all times, although such weapons were rarely used on the European front during World War II. Used by various units of the Wehrmacht, it could be quickly deployed when needed.

Today, the WWII German gas mask is a well-known militaria item, valued for its authenticity and condition. Complete sets with original canister, filter, and straps are especially sought after. Manufacturer markings and production variations increase their historical interest and appeal among collectors.
