| historical background |

The Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse) is one of the most iconic German military decorations, reintroduced in 1939 at the beginning of World War II by Adolf Hitler. Based on earlier versions from the 19th century, it was awarded to soldiers of the Wehrmacht for acts of bravery or merit in combat. It features a black iron core with a silver frame and is suspended from a ribbon.

This decoration was typically awarded for acts of courage that did not yet qualify for higher distinctions, such as the Iron Cross 1st Class. It was worn through the buttonhole or as a ribbon on the uniform and often represented a soldier’s first official recognition in combat. It was issued throughout the war to members of various units of the Wehrmacht.

Today, the Iron Cross 2nd Class is one of the most sought-after decorations in militaria collecting. Valued for its strong historical significance, it remains relatively accessible while still highly desirable, especially when accompanied by its original ribbon or issue packet. Manufacturer marks and production variations also influence its appeal and market value among collectors.
