| historical background |
The Auslandsorganisation der NSDAP, commonly referred to as the AO, was established to supervise NSDAP members living outside Germany and to maintain links between German expatriate communities and the Reich. Organized through national and local branches across numerous countries, it served as the international arm of the party and contributed to the dissemination of National Socialist ideology among German citizens living abroad.
Following the NSDAP’s rise to power in 1933, the Auslandsorganisation expanded significantly and developed an extensive network throughout Europe, the Americas, Africa, and parts of Asia. Under the leadership of Ernst Wilhelm Bohle, it coordinated party groups abroad while acting as a liaison between Reich authorities and overseas German communities. Its activities were progressively affected by the outbreak of World War II and the severing of diplomatic relations with many countries.
Objects, insignia, documents, and effects related to the Auslandsorganisation rank among the less frequently encountered categories of German WWII political militaria. Closely associated with the NSDAP’s presence beyond the borders of the Reich, they illustrate a distinctive aspect of the party’s organization and hold a valued place within specialized collections dedicated to the political structures of the Third Reich.
